Quarterly Updates

July to Sept 2006:

July and August have seen some excellent progress on the Singapore Flyer terminal building with the completion of the first storey and preparation under way for the second and top floors.

Although scheduled to eventually become a tropical rain forest environment, the terminal building's central atrium is currently undergoing preparation of the underground services and the installation of the temporary support structures necessary for the erection of the giant observation wheel (GOW). With the late September planned arrival of the first main support leg sections, time is of the essence.

Kobe, Japan saw the first inspection of the GOW capsule prototype. Focusing on the "passenger perception", special attention was paid to the humidity, temperature and noise levels in the capsule during operation. Being a viewing attraction the optical properties of the capsule glass was of uttermost importance and proved to be better than expected.

In the ongoing interior design of the terminal building, the development team has given preference to natural marble and granite in various finishes with the natural stone complimenting the greenery of the central atrium forest garden. The implementation of the latest in ceramics in the form of wood textured floor tiles will provide an ideal combination of visual appeal and maintainability.

The proposed GOW illumination using LED (Light Emitting Diodes) technology is proving to be a good choice in providing an impressive solution to the GOW lighting. The low power and high reliability products we plan to use offer ideal flexibility by allowing each individual lighting unit to be addressed in real time via a wireless DMX control system. DMX is an industry normalized protocol and allows for easy adaptation and expansion should this be required in future. The current proposal includes up to 8 preset "shows", all easily selected by the operator. As is the case with any outdoor lighting design, final "show" analysis will be done during the commissioning period and where necessary adjusted.
